A Life Behind the Lens

The journey behind Have Lens Will Travel Photography began in 1983 when Andrew A. Vanderplas worked for a small-town newspaper covering local events. Seeing his photographs published sparked a lasting passion for photography.

Although family and career responsibilities paused that dream for many years, Andrew returned to photography in 2010 when he purchased an Olympus camera and began teaching himself through practice and experimentation.

In 2015, he upgraded to a Nikon D850 and started attending photography courses and workshops, expanding both his knowledge and creative possibilities. Through travel to many destinations, he began building a diverse photography collection. After losing hundreds of images due to technical challenges, he committed to rebuilding his library with even greater dedication.

Today, Have Lens Will Travel Photography continues to grow through exploration, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the world around us.

The Philosophy Behind the Camera

Photography is about capturing moments that may never happen again.

Andrew believes every place and experience deserves to be documented with respect, because no one knows if that moment will ever return. Rather than focusing on one specific subject, Have Lens Will Travel Photography embraces the diversity of the world—from landscapes and wildlife to cultural scenes and sporting events.

His goal is simple: experience the world, capture its beauty, and share those moments through photography.

Recognition and Published Work

Andrew A. Vanderplas’ photography has been included by invitation in two books about Canada, highlighting remarkable locations and landscapes.

In 2023, his photograph of the fishing village at Telegraph Cove was the only Canadian entry submitted by Shutterbug accepted by Dodho Magazine in New York for an article on amateur photography.

In addition to travel and nature photography, he also photographs hockey and rodeo events, capturing the excitement and movement of live sports.
